Undersmile | “Milk” (Official Music Video)

Yes, this is the band on the British sludge/doom scene that I’ve been hyping for months and months, and with Narwhal, they have delivered. This is the first single from the aforementioned album. Watch very carefully. Better yet, just close your eyes and doom the fuck out.

Finally, somebody has created a Fuck Yeah Jucifer blog! Go check it out!

Baroness | “Take My Bones Away”

Finally, new Baroness! This is a lot more catchy and “pop” sounding than normal for them, but I really dig it. I could tell at the show in Nashville that this song would be a fan favorite, and so far the reviews have been positive. Check it out for yourself :)

Good Sludge/Stoner/Doom Metal and Grunge Blogs on Tumblr

Sludge and grunge are sibling genres that formed around the same time (something that music historians often overlook), so it’s no wonder that they have over-lapping fan bases. Since sludge/stoner/doom metal and grunge are the primary genres I cover on this blog, I thought it would be a good idea to give some attention to other blogs who cover these scenes, most of which do so much better than my blog.

Here’s a pretty well-rounded and brief list of some of the best s/s/d and grunge-centric blogs on Tumblr. I should note that none of these blogs are dedicated to just one or a few artists (ie Fuck Yeah Mastodon or Hole-Lotta-Love), but they focus on all participants of these scenes on a large scale. Click on the blog names to visit and/or follow.

Sludge/Stoner/Doom Metal:

  • Doom Congregation is every s/s/d pirate’s wet dream. The entire blog is nothing but free downloads of great sludge, stoner, and doom metal albums, although the owner of the blog does encourage readers to buy copies of featured albums if they like what they hear. The blog isn’t updated often, but when it is, something special will be waiting for you.
  • Doom Sludge is a good source of sludge and doom metal news, is very no-frills, and will definitely not spam your dash with unnecessary crap.
  • Fuck Yeah Doom has a lot of good audio and video posts, and is pretty good at staying on top of the latest news that develops on the scene.
  • Fuck Yeah Sludge Metal is an excellent source of high-res concert photos and band biographies, as well as the latest sludge, stoner, and doom metal news. The blog is updated every day with unique, fresh content and very few senseless re-blogs. I can not pimp this blog enough; seriously, go check it out.
  • Sludge Nation is a jack-of-all-trades sort of blog with a lot of audio, video, and photo posts of all of the best-known sludge, stoner, and doom metal bands. It is regularly updated and always has something interesting to offer.

Grunge:

  • Alt-Grunge 1990s has a name that’s pretty self-explanatory, as it only covers grunge and alternative bands from the 1990s. This blog is a great source of audio posts that serve as a nice sampler for someone who might not know much about the grunge scene.
  • Fuck Yeah Grunge Music is an image-centric blog that regularly features rare pictures of grunge artists, as well as high-resolution GIFs and music videos. Very no-frills and it won’t clog up your dash one bit.
  • Grunge Book is the official blog from the authors of the new book Everyboby Loves Our Town: An Oral History Of Grunge. Authentic grunge goodies and exclusive interviews from people who were sizable players on the Seattle scene back in the day. This is definitely the best grunge-centric blog on Tumblr by a long shot.
  • Grunge is Dirty Like Me is mainly centric around the “big four” of grunge - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. Other bands are featured as well, and most posts revolve around photos and music videos of various grunge artists.
  • Martyrs Of Grunge is dedicated to educating Tumblr users about what grunge really represented through photos, interviews, trivia, and audio posts. It’s regularly updated with interesting content, but it definitely won’t spam you to death.
+ ROYALLY YELLOW AND GREEN: BARONESS AND ROYAL THUNDER @ THE END, NASHVILLE, TN
*To see full-size images and other content, please click to the main page of my blog*
Last night was a bit of a whirlwind of events. As of April 26, I am a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and my main duder Jared gave me one hell of a graduation present by taking me up to Nashville for this show. Before the show, we spent some time in Hendersonville paying respects at the graves of Johnny Cash and the Carter family, which really set the mood for the show coming later in the evening. We arrived at The End early and waited around in drizzly rain with coffee and doughnuts. I talked a bit with Josh from Royal Thunder, who amazingly remembered me from last summer (probably because I was a babbling drunken idiot the last time he saw me). In any case, the show soon got under way.

Royal Thunder, from the Atlanta scene, was a band I was only modestly familiar with before seeing this show, although a few people have shoved them in my face quite a bit over the past few months *coughPetercough*. They have this very retro, old-school psychedelia vibe to them that was good to trance out to, and I have to say that Mlny Parsons has one hell of a voice. She comes from the Jinx Dawson/Grace Slick school of singing, and her melodic yet gritty vocal style fit really well with the music. They’re a young band but definitely have more time to grow and shape up. Keep your eye on these folks.

Baroness’ set felt like something completely otherworldly. A few blog readers had tipped me off that they would perform two or three new songs from their upcoming double-LPYellow & Green, and they most certainly did. The first new track was absolutely gorgeous, even though I don’t know the name of it. The second was “Take My Bones Away”, the same track they teased fans with at a live show last September. I could already tell by the audiences’ reactions that this song was going to be a new fan favorite.
There were two other major highlights about their set that had be absolutely in hysterics. First was the reprised version of “Steel that Sleeps The Eye”, which has Baizley doing almost all of the vocal parts. I never realized what a gorgeous singing voice that guy has until he was towering over me, humming those words out of his mouth. Absolutely beautiful. The next big surprise was the performance of “Rays on Pinion”, my favorite Baroness song, and one that I thought I would never get to hear live. It was completely magic.

All in all, it was one of the best concert experiences I’ve had in recent memory. As mentioned in my previous post, I met guitarist Pete Adams after the show and told him that this show was my graduation present, and he hugged me and said he was proud of me. What an ace guy he is. His kind words alone was enough to totally make my night, and it served as a perfect ending to my academic career. Baroness are a band that I love dearly, their music is the closest thing I will ever get to hearing a work of art speak from its canvas. Much love also goes out to Jared for making all of this possible. You rule so fucking hard, and I love you for it.

PS: I have video footage from this show, but it will have to wait until Monday to be loaded onto YouTube. To see more live shots like the ones in this review, click HERE!

Mares of Thrace | “The Perpetrator” (Official Music Video)

The new music video from two of my favorite Canuks. Don’t watch this if you’re eating dinner and/or you have a weak stomach.

In a few short hours, I’ll be heading up to Nashville to see Baroness and Royal Thunder @ The End! If you live in the Nashville area, come out and join me in the festivities! I’ve got a hunch that Baroness will probably be playing new tunes tonight, and Royal Thunder probably will be as well, as both bands are on the verge of releasing new albums.

I’m also going to Hendersonville this afternoon with my local musician buddy Jared to visit the grave site of Johnny Cash. This is obviously a big deal for me - I’ve grown up with Cash’s music and have long lamented the fact that I never got to meet him in person. Jared and I will pay our respects in the best way that we know how - with music. Expect footage.

I will have pictures and maybe some videos to bring back of the Baroness/Royal Thunder show, and as always, there will be a concert review that will be posted either Saturday or next Monday. Stay tuned!
