Kylesa | “What Becomes An End”
I fucking love this song. Got memories of this blasting out of Julya’s car last summer. We need another Kylesa/Margaritas/Tacos night.
This is what my notebook for school now looks like.
The first picture illustrates the front of the notebook. Only stickers from Georgia bands were allowed on the front (except for Deftones, because there was a blank space that needed to be filled). Bands featured are:
- Guzik (Athens)
- Mastodon (Atlanta)
- Kylesa (Savannah)
- Black Tusk (Savannah)
- Branded With Fear (Atlanta)
- Jucifer (Athens)
- Death of Kings (Atlanta)
The second photo is on the back of my notebook cover. I only have three band stickers there so far (need more!), and there’s a random sticker I got in the UTC book store. Bands featured are:
If you are a band, especially a sludge/doom band from the Southeast and you have stickers, GIVE THEM TO ME, PLEASE. I also REALLY need a Baroness sticker. Help a sister out!
Another fun story time from your old Aunt Doro - gather ‘round, childrens!
Here in Chattanooga, I have a friend named Chris, who is the president of one of the chapters of the Georgia Metal Alliance, an extended family in the Southeast that promotes metal bands and events, and takes young rascals like me to shows (which is how I’ve been able to afford seeing many of the bands I like). To my surprise, in the late ’90s, the GMA had a member that would later go on to become the Queen of sludge. You know who I’m talking about.
You see, Chris “Wolverine” Waters was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia. He attended many early Damad shows and remembers when the Jinx was the Velvet Elvis. He’s also lived in Atlanta for a while, but is now settled into my hometown. Back in the late ’90s, Chris and a buddy of his got an opportunity to interview The Misfits when they played a gig at the Masquerade in ATL. They took a few teenagers in the GMA along for the ride and gave them the chance to meet Jerry, Michale, and Doyle.
See the blond girl in black with the pixie cut? That is a 19-year-old Laura Pleasants. Laura was a rabid Misfits fan back in those days and jumped at the opportunity to see them when Chris mentioned the trip. Accoring to him, she even got to dance on stage with the band and was the only girl that tried to form a pit. Chris moved to Atlanta soon after this interview and lost touch with a lot of people out of Savannah’s GMA chapter.
This past December, Chris was visiting family members in Savannah for the holidays and saw Kylesa at the Jinx. He still hadn’t figured out that the Laura on stage was the same Laura he knew from all those years ago, but what triggered his memory was when he met Laura after the show and she shook his hand. “I remembered that handshake, because it’s the firmest handshake I’ve ever gotten from a woman in my life!”, he said. For the next 30 minutes, they sat there reminiscing about the old days, and all these memories came flooding back.
He told her that he lived in Chattanooga now and knew me, and all those dots started to connect. Just as I’ve learned many times before, this is a really small fucking world we live in. Even though there are seven billion of us on the planet, everyone is somehow connected to one another through a long series of networks. The next time I see Kylesa in concert, Laura and I should have a few things to talk about. She was once a college kid like me, going to shows and looking for adventure, and like me, it was through the GMA. Maybe by the time I’m in my early ’30s, I’ll be in a successful band that people respect. Time knows no limits.
The pictures you see above are still images from a video that Chris got of the interview. He’s going to upload it in the next few days, and when he does, I’ll share the footage here! This is all so weirdly exciting.

Circle Takes the Square | “Enter By the Narrow Gates”
Really good intro, like the spacy music, but in my opinion, the harsh/screamy vocals kill the mood. If they could mute that shit out, I’d like it a lot better.
Another Savannah band. There are a ton of Savannah bands these days.
Damad | “Hide and Seek”
Posted this song before, but fuck it, I’m posting it again. This is Phillip Cope’s old band before he formed Kylesa with Laura Pleasants. Their vocalist, the magnificent Victoria Scalisi, is everything I wish I could accomplish as a vocalist. This song in particular just gets me going. It’s so heavy and brutal in the verses, and then everything melts into this catchy, sing-song chorus with bright, happy vocals. Just great.
BLACK TUSK - “RED EYES, BLACK SKIES”
Another marvelous Savannah, GA sludge band, in the same vein as Kylesa and Baroness. Apparently they came to Chattanooga last year and NOBODY FUCKING TOLD ME. Thanks a lot.
The riff that starts up around 2:00 makes me so horny. This is baby-making music for me.
…So now all of my fangirling will be thrown onto that blog instead of this one.
Click the title to view and follow (but only if you like Kylesa, of course!). Great band that deserved a place in the FuckYeah franchise.
I’m currenly looking for mods to help out with content, so if you’re interested, let me know!
