Made out of Babies | “Ire Fire”
It’s just heart-breaking to me that MooB broke up, and even more so since they didn’t even release their completed fourth album. Julie won’t speak on matters much, but my guess is that she just enjoys being a solo artist more than being in a structured band…heh. I thought she and Brandon Tobin played off of each other really well. He had the bonkers guitars and she had the bonkers vocals. You can definitely hear that dynamic in this song. Please crank this song to 11 and light your candles of mourning for another band gone too soon.
Just to clarify what the Women of Sludge/Stoner/Doom Metal group is all about, here’s what we look for:
Sludge grrls (Laura Pleasants, Kylesa)
Stoner grrls (Lori S., Acid King)
Doom grrls (Stevie Floyd, Dark Castle)
Post-Metal grrls (Julie Christmas, Made out of Babies)
Crust grrls (Amy Miret, Nausea)
Grunge grrls (Courtney Love, Hole)
Riot grrls (Kathleen Hanna, Bikini Kill)
No Wave grrls (Jarboe, Swans)
Noise/Experimental grrls (Stephanie, Tinsel Teeth)
Pioneers/Influential grrls (Jinx Dawson, Coven)
Got it? Good. JOIN US.
Made out of Babies - “Sugar”
Pretty excited about starting this feature up again, and the Facebook group has helped me to find more amazing women to interview. This time around, there should be some more special content. Every time I do this, it gets a little bigger and bigger, and I couldn’t be happier :)
Artists who are slated to be interviewed this time around include B (Rwake), Therese Lanz (KEN Mode, Mares of Thrace), Alicia Morgan (13), Meg Castellanos (Totimoshi) and the ladies of Seattle doom trio Grey. I’m also aiming to get Lori from Acid King this time around, seeing as how her touring schedule prevented her from being interviewed last April. We’ll see!
Actually, the interview with B (Rwake vocalist/keyboardist) was completed last night and she told me that once I post it up, she’ll send the link to Relapse :3
In the meantime while I sort all of this stuff out, check out some interviews I did during Part II:
Julie Christmas (Made out of Babies/Battle of Mice)
Taz Corona-Brown and Hel Sterne (Undersmile)
Chiyo Nukaga (Noothgrush, Graves at Sea, a million other bands!)
Claire Horrocks (Bastard of the Skies)
Liz Buckingham (13, Sourvein, Electric Wizard)
Enjoy!
MADE OUT OF BABIES - “IRE FIRE” live at CBGB, 2004
Just found this footage today…
…Have you ever walked down a street with new asphalt in triple-digit degree weather in the middle of July, and you become so light-headed from the smell and the heat that you don’t even notice a steamroller heading straight towards you? This song is what that sounds like.
“Loosey Goosey” - Made Out of Babies
Swarm - Made Out of Babies
Name: JULIE CHRISTMAS
Bands You’ve Played In:
Made Out of Babies, Battle Of Mice…doing stuff under my own name at the moment (with John LaMacchia and Andrew Schneider)
What are your favorite songs to perform live?
Sometimes when I make eye contact with people in the audience I can tell by the expression on their faces that they are feeling something (or desperately in need of the bathroom). Those are the songs I want to do.
Did you have any female rock idols growing up? Who were they?
My idols really weren’t female or from the “rock” genre for the most part, but I guess I had some minor rock/punk girl crushes: Wendy O Williams (gotta love a woman wielding a chainsaw in ass-less chaps), Joan Jett, Poison Ivy, Poly Styrene & Kat Bjelland.
Your advice to girls who want to start their own metal bands is…
If someone hasn’t called you a bitch within 6 months, you’re doing something wrong. Just keep your head down and do the work. If you’re good at something people will notice.
