+ JUICY KINGS: JUCIFER, DEATH OF KINGS AND SPEWLITATOR AT THE EARL
*To see pictures and other content, please click to the main page of my blog*
First off, I apologize with being so late with this review. For the past two days, I’ve had an awful sinus infection that likely came around due to the lack of sleep I had gotten in Atlanta. Writing was the last thing I felt like doing, but I’m well enough to finally cover this show.

I was late getting to the Earl due to some general bullshit that I won’t write about here, but once I did, the party began. It was St. Patrick’s Day and everyone was in a festive mood. I showed up at the tail end of Death of Kings’ set and didn’t get any photos, which was a bummer, but I did get a few good shots of Spewlitator’s set. They have this sort of Exodus crossed with Napalm Death sound that makes me nostalgic for the late ’80s. Amos “Yeti” Rifkin, the dude that I was staying with during part of my vacation, pulled double-duty as the drummer for both opening bands. I had a good time watching him pound away, especially on that bass drum that gave off some seriously orgasmic vibrations. That’s what happens when you’re front row at a metal show in a venue with wobbly floorboards.

Once Jucifer took the stage, everything erupted into a frenzy…literally. Some dudes in the crowd tried to start a pit (seriously, who stars a pic to Jucifer?) and two moshers got into a fight. I was punched in the side of my face during the scuffle, and police had to escort them out of the club. This didn’t stop Amber and Ed from bringing the doomy heat, though. Amber, rocking leggings and some seriously tight jean shorts, owned that fucking stage like a goddess. She and Ed have been together for so many years that they can noodle songs together off the top of their heads and still come out in synch. The highlight of their set was getting to hear “Contempt” live, because I fucking love that song. After it was over, hubby and wifey gave each other a kiss and Amber blew kisses out to the audience. They’re adorable.
I briefly got to talk with Amber and Ed, and we were joking about how Jucifer were playing a show in Chattanooga on the same night I was scheduled to return home, so we would likely be on the interstate together. They didn’t have any t-shirts available (which was a bummer), but I still have a few stickers. It was just really cool to see them again, because they are two of the sweetest and most supportive people you will ever meet. I have one decent video from their live set, which you can checkout in the sidebar of my blog. For more pictures from the show, click HERE.

This is what my notebook for school now looks like.

The first picture illustrates the front of the notebook. Only stickers from Georgia bands were allowed on the front (except for Deftones, because there was a blank space that needed to be filled). Bands featured are:

The second photo is on the back of my notebook cover. I only have three band stickers there so far (need more!), and there’s a random sticker I got in the UTC book store. Bands featured are:

If you are a band, especially a sludge/doom band from the Southeast and you have stickers, GIVE THEM TO ME, PLEASE. I also REALLY need a Baroness sticker. Help a sister out!

+ Great shot I got of Amber Valentine at the Jucifer show last Saturday night. Love them so much!!! Got a full review coming up in a bit :)

Jucifer | “Window (Where The Sea Falls Forever)”

Southern sludgy boogie woogie with pretty girl vocals and French lyrics…why the hell not?

UPCOMING SHOWS (Just So You Know)

Money has been extremely tight lately (yay eating M&Ms, ramen noodles, and ham sandwiches!), but there are five gigs coming up that I’m going to try my damndest not to miss:

  1. JUCIFER, March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day), The Earl, ATL
  2. BARONESS, April 27, Exit/In, Nashville
  3. MELVINS/UNSANE, May 4, Exit/In, Nashville
  4. MASTODON/OPETH, May 12, Masquerade, ATL
  5. SICKNESS IN THE SYSTEM, May 17, Heartwood Music Festival, South Pittsburgh, TN

Show #1 occurs during my Spring Break, so that should be one hell of a time. Show #2 is the day after I finish all of my college finals. Show #3 is the night before my college graduation ceremony, and show #4 is the week after I graduate. Show #5 is a few days before my birthday. In other words, all of these shows correlate to something I can feel good about having achieved.

If anybody in Nashville or Atlanta reads this, is there a way I could crash at your place for the night for a couple of these shows? I might have to travel alone and might not have a way back during the night.

Great sludge/stoner/doom metal albums featuring powerful vocal performances by great front women.

Jucifer, L’autrichienne

Dark Castle, Spirited Migration

Acid King, III

Bloody Panda, Summon

Damad, Burning Cold

Kylesa, Static Tensions

Made out of Babies, Trophy

Rwake, Voices of Omens

Neurosis & Jarboe, Self-Titled

Mares of Thrace, The Moulting

I want a love like Amber and Ed’s <3
Jucifer are back in Chattanooga tonight, and they gave me VIP status to the show, but sadly I won’t be able to attend. I explained to Ed last night that in addition to my tedious academic schedule, I was also sick with a cold/sort throat and anticipating the Mastodon show on Friday. Jucifer don’t usually take the stage until 1 AM, and I got up at 6 AM this morning for a class, and will have to leave for Atlanta early tomorrow…then there’s the Mastodon after-party at Elmyr, which will stretch on into 2 AM Saturday morning. In other words, if I don’t get a decent night’s sleep tonight, I’m going to fucking drop.
Fortunately, Jucifer are good people and understand. I just wish they had come through Chattanooga last week, or even next week. Regardless, I’m going to hang out with Amber and Ed before the show tonight, probably this afternoon, because I’d love to see them again. They’ve been really kind to me in the past, and their friendship is one I want to keep :)

Behind Every Great ManĀ  by Jucifer

Amber Valentine’s obsession with all things French is puzzling, but still kind of cool.
