Finally, somebody has created a Fuck Yeah Jucifer blog! Go check it out!
Sludge and grunge are sibling genres that formed around the same time (something that music historians often overlook), so it’s no wonder that they have over-lapping fan bases. Since sludge/stoner/doom metal and grunge are the primary genres I cover on this blog, I thought it would be a good idea to give some attention to other blogs who cover these scenes, most of which do so much better than my blog.
Here’s a pretty well-rounded and brief list of some of the best s/s/d and grunge-centric blogs on Tumblr. I should note that none of these blogs are dedicated to just one or a few artists (ie Fuck Yeah Mastodon or Hole-Lotta-Love), but they focus on all participants of these scenes on a large scale. Click on the blog names to visit and/or follow.
Sludge/Stoner/Doom Metal:
- Doom Congregation is every s/s/d pirate’s wet dream. The entire blog is nothing but free downloads of great sludge, stoner, and doom metal albums, although the owner of the blog does encourage readers to buy copies of featured albums if they like what they hear. The blog isn’t updated often, but when it is, something special will be waiting for you.
- Doom Sludge is a good source of sludge and doom metal news, is very no-frills, and will definitely not spam your dash with unnecessary crap.
- Fuck Yeah Doom has a lot of good audio and video posts, and is pretty good at staying on top of the latest news that develops on the scene.
- Fuck Yeah Sludge Metal is an excellent source of high-res concert photos and band biographies, as well as the latest sludge, stoner, and doom metal news. The blog is updated every day with unique, fresh content and very few senseless re-blogs. I can not pimp this blog enough; seriously, go check it out.
- Sludge Nation is a jack-of-all-trades sort of blog with a lot of audio, video, and photo posts of all of the best-known sludge, stoner, and doom metal bands. It is regularly updated and always has something interesting to offer.
Grunge:
- Alt-Grunge 1990s has a name that’s pretty self-explanatory, as it only covers grunge and alternative bands from the 1990s. This blog is a great source of audio posts that serve as a nice sampler for someone who might not know much about the grunge scene.
- Fuck Yeah Grunge Music is an image-centric blog that regularly features rare pictures of grunge artists, as well as high-resolution GIFs and music videos. Very no-frills and it won’t clog up your dash one bit.
- Grunge Book is the official blog from the authors of the new book Everyboby Loves Our Town: An Oral History Of Grunge. Authentic grunge goodies and exclusive interviews from people who were sizable players on the Seattle scene back in the day. This is definitely the best grunge-centric blog on Tumblr by a long shot.
- Grunge is Dirty Like Me is mainly centric around the “big four” of grunge - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. Other bands are featured as well, and most posts revolve around photos and music videos of various grunge artists.
- Martyrs Of Grunge is dedicated to educating Tumblr users about what grunge really represented through photos, interviews, trivia, and audio posts. It’s regularly updated with interesting content, but it definitely won’t spam you to death.
Dorotea | “Bethany Christ” (Demo)
Please bear with me, this isn’t complete and is kind of shitty around the edges, but I slugged away at making a proper demo of this clusterfuck of a song, and Jamie recorded it. What’s hammered out on organ is what I actually want the guitars/bass to do, and obviously it would have a lot more depth and texture if played on these instruments. Be kind and let me know what you think about this song idea.
In my heart of hearts, I really do think that this was the most successful edition of WOSMAW thus far. A lot of hard work and tireless dedication went into organizing, writing, and planning for this event. This is a labor of love, and it gives me a chance to show readers like you what this blog is really about.
Everywhere around the world, there is some young girl picking up a Les Paul, a microphone, or a pair of drumsticks for the first time, aspiring to follow in the footsteps of their rock idols. If any of the women I have interviewed and honored here has introduced those girls to a whole world of underground music that they had never known about before, then I have done my job.
Extra special thanks are given to Stephanie of Tinsel Teeth and Michelle Temple of Black Skies, both of whom went as far as to schedule whole new photo shoots for their interviews and publicize WOSMAW IV to a broader audience. More thanks go out to the women on the British sludge/doom scene for being tireless messengers for my work, and also to Lori from Acid King for being so patient as I poked and prodded her relentlessly for an interview (Hey, sometimes it’s what you’ve got to do!). Until WOSMAW V comes along (which will likely be in September or October of this year), here’s a recap of the “Trailblazers” features and the five-question interviews I did this time around:
TRAILBLAZERS:
Runhild Gammelsæter (Thorr’s Hammer)
FIVE-QUESTION INTERVIEWS:
Kathleen Stubelek (Circle Takes The Square)
Amy Holifield (House of Capricorn)
Andrea Black (A Storm Of Light)

3. What are your favorite songs to perform live?
4. Did you have any female rock idols growing up? Who were they?
5. Your advice to girls that want to start their own metal band is:
Name: JENN “LADYEVIL” KILBURN
Bands You’ve Played In:
Machu Picchu, Visions of the Night, Bound Ether, Paranoid (tribute to Black Sabbath), Sun of Sabbath (Tribute to Sabbath), Keef, 7th Reign, Blizzard of Ozz (Tribute to Ozzy and Sabbath) as well as guest appearances with Banned from E.A.R.T.H., tribute to Black Sabbath. Most currently, Sister Caravan; we are looking for a female guitarist to complete our sorority trio. The “LadyEvil” handle is a nick name I picked up after playing in the Sabbath bands.
What are your favorite songs to perform live?
I love playing the part of Geezer Butler on stage, most notably I like to play the songs off the Paranoid album, Planet Caravan and Hand of Doom and later songs like Junior’s Eyes, A National Acrobat and tunes off of Volume 4. I don’t feel that its the quantity of notes that one plays, but the quality of them. Do the notes ring, do they sound as rich as they could. How do they contrast with the guitarist. From Sister Caravan, I enjoy getting my entire being in the song, playing bass and singing the lead at the same time.
Did you have any female rock idols growing up? Who were they?
Debra Harry, Stevie Nicks, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin to a degree. The first time I heard Blondie (Debra Harry) sing, I knew I had to be a musician; Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors album was really influential to me. I played that over and over. I was digging the vocal lines on Jefferson Airplane’s “, The Worst of”, as well. Unfortunately, a lot of my influences were male only because females have not had a lot of airplay, besides the pop songstresses. Joplin is always good at the karake bar. These days, I’m really digging Electric Wizard, Castle, and Soph from Alunah, and from closer to home, Alia O’Brien from Blood Ceremony. I got the chance to open twice for Blood Ceremony; once in a Sabbath tribute on Summer Solstice, and another time with Keef. The only problem was I had broken my wrist prior to the Keef show, so I had to attend wearing a knuckle-to-armpit cast. At least Alia signed my cast. That was the night of their Toronto CD release party.
Your advice to girls that want to start their own metal band is:
My advice for females who want to start their own metal band? Music is the goal. Don’t ever accept that you are not good enough. Keep practicing, but enjoy it. If you know your stuff, thats all that matters.
Thorr’s Hammer | “Troll”
Runhild’s vocal might in action.
TRAILBLAZERS: RUNHILD GAMMELSÆTER
In honor of International Women’s Day, the last edition of my Trailblazers series is dedicated to a woman that obliterated any remaining shards of heavy metal’s glass ceiling left behind by vocalists before her. Amongst a sea of mediocre “br00tal” death metal teenaged boys starting horrible cover bands in their basement, there was one seventeen-year-old girl that channeled the bowels of hell with her throat - Norway’s own Runhild Gammelsæter.

In 1996, Gammelsæter spend some time in the United States as an exchange student. It didn’t take long for her to meet up with three other local musicians and form the doom metal outfit Thorr’s Hammer. Preferring to growl it out in her native Norwegian tongue, Runhild shocked audiences that were expecting the classically pretty blond to have a sweet, operatic vocal delivery. After recording one EP,Dommedagsnatt,Thorr’s Hammer were forced to disband after Gammelsæter returned to Norway. She eventually earned a degree in biology and now works as a biochemist, something that many musicians couldn’t parade on a resume.

Aside from her academic achievements, Runhild has stayed active in music, fronting Khlyst and releasing solo efforts. Thorr’s Hammer also have recently reunited for a few festival gigs, and there are rumors that the band will finally reform and release a proper album. Now that metal as a whole seems much less shocked and much more accepting by women with more agressive and gutteral vocal deliveries, this might be the right time for Thorr’s Hammer to get the attention that they have long deserved. No matter what the band decides to do, Runhild Gammelsæter will continue to inspire new generations of young girls that are dead-set on proving to their “br00tal” male high school classmates that they are more than just a pretty face.
