Good Sludge/Stoner/Doom Metal and Grunge Blogs on Tumblr

Sludge and grunge are sibling genres that formed around the same time (something that music historians often overlook), so it’s no wonder that they have over-lapping fan bases. Since sludge/stoner/doom metal and grunge are the primary genres I cover on this blog, I thought it would be a good idea to give some attention to other blogs who cover these scenes, most of which do so much better than my blog.

Here’s a pretty well-rounded and brief list of some of the best s/s/d and grunge-centric blogs on Tumblr. I should note that none of these blogs are dedicated to just one or a few artists (ie Fuck Yeah Mastodon or Hole-Lotta-Love), but they focus on all participants of these scenes on a large scale. Click on the blog names to visit and/or follow.

Sludge/Stoner/Doom Metal:

  • Doom Congregation is every s/s/d pirate’s wet dream. The entire blog is nothing but free downloads of great sludge, stoner, and doom metal albums, although the owner of the blog does encourage readers to buy copies of featured albums if they like what they hear. The blog isn’t updated often, but when it is, something special will be waiting for you.
  • Doom Sludge is a good source of sludge and doom metal news, is very no-frills, and will definitely not spam your dash with unnecessary crap.
  • Fuck Yeah Doom has a lot of good audio and video posts, and is pretty good at staying on top of the latest news that develops on the scene.
  • Fuck Yeah Sludge Metal is an excellent source of high-res concert photos and band biographies, as well as the latest sludge, stoner, and doom metal news. The blog is updated every day with unique, fresh content and very few senseless re-blogs. I can not pimp this blog enough; seriously, go check it out.
  • Sludge Nation is a jack-of-all-trades sort of blog with a lot of audio, video, and photo posts of all of the best-known sludge, stoner, and doom metal bands. It is regularly updated and always has something interesting to offer.

Grunge:

  • Alt-Grunge 1990s has a name that’s pretty self-explanatory, as it only covers grunge and alternative bands from the 1990s. This blog is a great source of audio posts that serve as a nice sampler for someone who might not know much about the grunge scene.
  • Fuck Yeah Grunge Music is an image-centric blog that regularly features rare pictures of grunge artists, as well as high-resolution GIFs and music videos. Very no-frills and it won’t clog up your dash one bit.
  • Grunge Book is the official blog from the authors of the new book Everyboby Loves Our Town: An Oral History Of Grunge. Authentic grunge goodies and exclusive interviews from people who were sizable players on the Seattle scene back in the day. This is definitely the best grunge-centric blog on Tumblr by a long shot.
  • Grunge is Dirty Like Me is mainly centric around the “big four” of grunge - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. Other bands are featured as well, and most posts revolve around photos and music videos of various grunge artists.
  • Martyrs Of Grunge is dedicated to educating Tumblr users about what grunge really represented through photos, interviews, trivia, and audio posts. It’s regularly updated with interesting content, but it definitely won’t spam you to death.
Things You Can Look Forward To In 2012…

I might not update this blog for a few days, but here’s what I have in store for 2012:

  • A full review of the Kylesa/Whores/Royal Thunder show on New Year’s Eve. This will be my last show review until May (unless it’s a local Chattanooga show), so I’ve got to make this one count!
  • Beyond Doomed: A brand new mini-series of articles that explores occult and masonic imagery in sludge/stoner/doom metal music and album art. I have enlisted the help of a few world-weary souls to help me in these articles, but if you’re an expert on occult symbolism and arcana, feel free to volunteer in helping me out!
  • Women of Sludge Metal Appreciation Week Part IV will probably get under way in March. If you are a woman in a sludge/stoner/doom metal band and want to participate (either by submitting music or answering my five-question interview), please hit up my ask box! I want to get more interviews this time around. Part III was a bit of a disaster ^^’

Also, in 2012, we can look forward to new releases by:

  • Neurosis
  • Baroness
  • High on Fire
  • Tiger! Tiger!
  • Made out of Babies
  • Sleigh Bells
  • Undersmile
  • Surely many more that I can’t think of off the top of my head!

Just a reminder: Here are some great sludge/stoner/doom-related blogs to follow (I don’t run any of these, so don’t ask me to post anything to them!):

Sludge Nation

Forever Doom

Sludge Core

See you lovely souls in the new year! Let’s make it a good one!

BECAUSE WHEN MASTODON ORGASMS, WE ALL WIN.

+ Bet you didn’t know there was a color version of this photo, did you? Well, I wanted to save it for something special, like…starting a new blog :D
This is something that I’ve been meaning to do for ages now but never got around to it. The purpose of this blog is just to share my life with everyone and anyone who cares enough to read it. My photography will be posted here along with my ramblings/rantings about music, politics, Chattanooga, friends, school, and whatever else I care to share my opinions and viewpoints on. You may not always like them, but I bet I’ll keep your attention ;)
Anyone and everyone is welcome to comment and join the fun! Let me know what you’d like to see out of me in the future :D
