¡AY CARAMBA! You have flawed logic, Señor!
Every once in a while, somebody will show up on Facebook who just takes pride in being the turd in the punch bowl. This morning, such a thing happened in my very successful Women of Sludge/Stoner/Doom Metal group. This guy joined the group just to tell everybody that he thought our group was sexist, and it wasn’t even in a separate post - it was on a Black Flag video of Kira Roessler tearing shit up live. This is either someone who likes to get attention for being an ass, or doesn’t understand how Facebook groups are supposed to work. I’m leaning more towards the former scenario.
In later comments, dude rationalized that it was “sexist” to separate women in s/s/d from men, because “we’re all musicians” and it shouldn’t matter. Yes, on a base level, it doesn’t really matter. Musicians are musicians regardless of their gender. Now that being said, I see absolutely nothing wrong with having a group dedicated to female musicians who play this type of music. This isn’t just a bunch of silly girls posting up photos of Laura Pleasants or Stevie Floyd and spazzing over them. Most of the women who are members of the group are musicians themselves. Laura, Stevie, Julie Christmas, Chiyo Nukaga, Liz Buckingham, Alician Morgan, Brittany “B” Fugate, Therese Lanz, Sophie Day - all members. If you diss the group and its mission to connect these women with their fans (and even to help female-fronted bands get signed to labels or added to tour rosters), you’re kind of dissing the women who make the music in the first place.
The point isn’t to separate women from men. We have a good deal of male members who are in very well-known sludge bands. Mike Scheidt, Phillip Cope, and the boys in Sourvein are just a few. They respect what we’re doing and actively participate in group discussions. Case in point, this group I created has been hugely successful beyond my expectations, and it’s only because people within the sludge, stoner, and doom metal underground share my vision and appreciate the fact that fans actually care this much. Sexist? Hardly. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, honey.
